Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra bring the Big Easy to our 35 th Annual Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier High School. Mr. Marsalis, a renowned trombonist, producer, composer, and educator, received the 2016 Best of The Beat - Best Contemporary Jazz Artist award. Recognized with his family as the 2011 National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award Winners, Marsalis continues to give back to the fine arts and specifically the jazz community. An unforgettable winter concert experience awaits! The evening concert opens with an inspired set by New Trier's top jazz group, Jazz Ensemble 1, joined by several guest artists. After a brief intermission the stage turns over to Delfeayo Marsalis and his Uptown Jazz Orchestra, a who's who of New Orleans's most prominent jazz musicians.
From Nic Meyer, director of Jazz Ensembles at New Trier: "Clearly Delfeayo belongs to a musical dynasty, and his artistry reflects that. Mr. Marsalis's direction of his ensemble preserves the promise of New Orleans jazz music by empowering his musicians to dialogue and create in real time, to riff and improvise their way through a catalogue of standard and original material imbued with the spirit of the birthplace of jazz, with all the revelry that entails. Our audience will be thrilled with this concert, I'm certain of it."
The Feb. 3 headline performance will cap a free, daylong, noncompetitive student jazz festival, one of the nation's largest. There will also be three free public concerts during the day, plus other highlights: As an added bonus, this year's festival will take place in New Trier's new music facilities.
- The Marques Carroll Trumpet Summit at Noon
- Jazz Directors' Big Band , comprised of the visiting schools' band directors, at 2:45 p.m.
- The University of Miami Frost Concert Jazz Band at 4 p.m.
For its 35 th year, the New Trier Jazz Festival will host over 40 visiting high school and middle school jazz ensembles from around the country, many of whom return year after year for the unique educational experience the gathering delivers.
Students spend the day performing for world-renowned jazz clinicians, attending workshops and master classes and taking in concerts. All daytime events are free and open to the public.
