A. SETS GROUP GOALS AND STRATEGIES

Setting group goals and strategies involves taking an active role in identifying group goals, generating multiple strategies to achieve them, and working toward their successful completion.

Advanced:

  • consistently identifies group goals and works diligently until their completion;
  • consistently takes an active role in generating effective strategies to best achieve group goals.

Mastery:

  • often identifies group goals and works toward their completion;
  • often contributes sound strategies with which to achieve goals.

Competent:

  • helps identify group goals and work towards them;
  • takes some role in designing strategy, but often generates a single approach.

Developing:

  • rarely participates in setting group goals, but works toward completing some;
  • rarely generates strategies with which to achieve these goals.

B. GROUP INTERACTION

Group interaction involves interpersonal skills such as listening, compromise, tact, and sensitivity towards others. It also includes being present at group meetings to help the group effort and to keep group members on task.

Advanced:

  • consistently demonstrates effective interpersonal skills by actively promoting positive group interaction without prompting;
  • expresses ideas and opinions in ways which are always sensitive to the feelings or knowledge of others;
  • always attends group meetings;
  • devotes full attention to the work at hand;
  • consistently keeps the group on task, providing encouragement, constructive criticism, and suggestions.

Mastery:

  • often demonstrates effective interpersonal skills by participating in group interaction without prompting;
  • expresses ideas and opinions in ways which are sensitive to the feelings and knowledge of others;
  • regularly attends group meetings;
  • attends to the work at hand;
  • often keeps the group on task, providing encouragement, constructive criticism, and suggestions.

Competent:

  • sometimes demonstrates effective interpersonal skills by participating in group interaction; may require prompting;
  • may not always express ideas and opinions in ways which are sensitive to the feelings and knowledge of others;
  • attends most group meetings;
  • usually attends to the work at hand;
  • sometimes keeps the group on task and occasionally provides constructive criticism and suggestions.

Developing:

  • rarely demonstrates effective interpersonal skills, even if prompted;
  • expresses ideas and opinions infrequently, or may display insensitivity to the feelings and knowledge of others;
  • attends group meetings infrequently;
  • pays little attention to the work at hand;
  • may distract the group from the task, offer harsh criticism, or otherwise decrease the group effort.

C. ADAPTABILITY

Adaptability includes the following group maintenance skills: helping the group identify needed changes in work procedures, recognizing various viewpoints, anticipating conflicts, and working towards their resolution.

Advanced:

  • consistently helps the group identify and implement needed changes in group procedures;
  • consistently affirms the validity of different viewpoints;
  • identifies obstacles impeding group consensus, and initiates efforts to work around them.

Mastery:

  • often helps identify and implement needed changes in group procedures;
  • often sees problems from different viewpoints;
  • negotiates and mediates differences, helping the group move toward consensus.

Competent:

  • sometimes helps identify or implement needed changes in group procedures;
  • sometimes sees problems from different viewpoints;
  • supports efforts toward consensus by helping negotiate differences.

Developing:

  • rarely contributes to changes in group procedures;
  • rarely sees problems from different viewpoints;
  • usually waits for others to negotiate and mediate differences, or may resist efforts toward consensus.

D. COMMITMENT TO THE GROUP

Commitment to the group entails not only completing one's own responsibilities on time but also helping others with their tasks for the good of the group.

Advanced:

  • independently and efficiently carries out and completes all tasks assigned by the group;
  • initiates support for the work and efforts of others, helping them complete their tasks;
  • meets all deadlines set by the group.

Mastery:

  • carries out all tasks assigned by the group;
  • supports the work and efforts of other group members;
  • meets all deadlines set by the group.

Competent:

  • carries out most tasks assigned by the group; omissions are minor;
  • occasionally supports the work and efforts of other group members, but may require prompting;
  • meets most deadlines set by the group.

Developing:

  • fails to carry out the tasks assigned to him/her by the group; omission may be major;
  • is unable, or unwilling, to support the work and efforts of other group members;
  • fails to meet deadlines set by the group.
