New Trier English Department

The 9th Annual Literary Festival
Friday, October 12, 2012

Registration is closed.

The English program is a four-year sequence that encourages students to become actively-engaged, thinking persons in a complex, dynamic world. The curriculum offers an oppo rtunity for students to develop their language potential in courses that are challenging but commensurate with their abilities. All English courses emphasize the acquisition and development of the skills of disciplined reading, discussion, and oral presentation as well as mastery of the various forms, modes, and strategies of written composition. From the richness of ideas explored in the study of literature, the student can recognize and empathize with the variety of the human experiences and gain an understanding of the enduring power of the human mind and spirit.

"I have sometimes dreamt, at least, that when the Day of Judgment dawns and the great conquerors and lawyers and statesmen come to receive their rewards-their crowns, their laurels, their names carved indelibly upon imperishable marble-the Almighty will turn to Peter and will say, not without a certain envy when He sees us coming with our books under our arms, "Look, these need no reward. We have nothing to give them here. They have loved reading."
