Three deserving New Trier Latin students were awarded the annual John R. Thomson Italian Scholarship this semester, which provides an opportunity to enhance their appreciation of the Latin language and ancient Roman culture by studying Italian internationally, nationally, or locally. This scholarship is supported by the John R. Thomson scholarship fund and the New Trier Modern and Classical Languages Department.
Sophomore Mattea Carberry, junior Caitlyn Mulligan, and junior Zoe Siegel were selected due to their exceptional performance in Latin class, commitment to the Latin program at New Trier, desire to learn another foreign language, and recommendations by their Latin teachers and other New Trier staff members.
The recipients are selected based on an application and their overall academic achievements. This scholarship was established by the former students of Mr. Thomson, who taught Latin and Italian at New Trier High School from 1957-1985.
