The science curriculum is directed toward investigative processes designed to meet the individual needs and abilities of New Trier students. The value of an experience for a student is not exclusively linked to a specific content or process, but also to the quality of the experience. Enthusiastic teachers instilling vitality for learning is a most important guiding principle.

Two New Trier juniors presented their research on cosmic raysat the American Association of Physics Teachers winter meeting in New Orleans this January, where they took second place among mostly college students for their poster presentation.

New Trier senior Madeline Oh was recently named a top 300 scholar in the Regeneron Science Talent Search 2023, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors. The competition recognizes promising young scientists who generate innovative solutions to solve significant global challenges through rigorous research and discoveries.

Science teacher Hanna Cohen, who teaches chemistry and astronomy at New Trier’s Winnetka Campus, received some exciting news over winter break: she has been selected to participate in the Space Exploration Educator Crew next year.

New Trier senior Alexandra Bardas was recently named one of the top 300 Scholars in the 80th Regeneron Science Talent Search-the nation's oldest and most prestigious science and mathematics competition for high school seniors. Scholars were selected from 1,760 students who entered from 611 high schools across 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and 10 countries.

On April 10, New Trier Science Olympiad competed in the Illinois Science Olympiad Virtual State Tournament and won second place out of 59 schools, once again earning the opportunity to compete at the Science Olympiad National Competition hosted by Arizona State University on May 21-22.

On Saturday, March 6, New Trier Science Olympiad sent one Varsity and two JV teams to compete at the Oakton College Regional. Results were released on March 13. New Trier won 1st place in the Varsity category out of 11 teams with a strong score of 24 points. New Trier's Varsity Science Olympiad team and additional students competing in trial events will compete for one of two bids to Nationals at the State Competition at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on April 10.

ABOUT
“Science, engineering, and technology permeate nearly every facet of modern life, and they also hold the key to meeting many of humanity’s most pressing current and future challenges…” This powerful assertion opens the seminal work, A Framework for K-12 Science Education published in 2012 by the National Research Council.
The science curriculum at New Trier is designed to help students develop the skills, knowledge, and thinking habits needed to meet these challenges. In short, students will learn about science while also learning through science. In their science classes, they will do what scientists do and think like scientists think.
As a result of their experience in science, students will:
- Learn to employ the major practices that scientists use as they investigate and build models and theories about the world
- Understand and apply practices that engineers use as they design and build systems
- Know the big ideas that cut across science disciplines and utilize these to better understand each domain of science
- Expand their understanding of the core scientific knowledge in specific disciplines
- Connect science with their everyday lives and prepare them for their future career
- Appreciate the wonders of our universe
