Prior to Tryouts

Registration

Players must be registered BEFORE tryouts begin through the New Trier Athletic Department in order to participate, no exceptions. You can find directions on how to register at https://www.newtrier.k12.il.us/Page/2560.

Updated Physical

Players must have an updated physical on file with Health Services. If your physical expires at any point during the season, you will be required to get a new one before you can continue playing.

Communicate Conflicts

If the player anticipates any conflicts during tryouts and/or the season, the player should discuss those with the coaching staff BEFORE tryouts. Please check the game schedule online!

Tryout Expectations

Attendance

All players must attend each day of the tryout to be evaluated appropriately. Players will not be placed on a team without a tryout. If a player is sick, they must discuss a make-up time with the coaching staff. If a player is injured, the coaching staff will discuss how to modify the tryout with the player. If you have a conflict, please contact Coach Kuzmanic.

Equipment

Wear appropriate athletic shoes and clothing needed for tryouts. Every player should have a New Trier Basketball practice jersey (no club or travel team jerseys). Please do NOT wear jewelry!

Team Selection

Levels of Play

As a program, we hope to field all four levels (Varsity, JV, Freshman A, and Freshman B). There is no set number of players that will be taken for each level. Our goal is for all players that are selected for a team to be placed at the level that they and the team will be successful.

Criteria for Selection

Selection for the team will be based on:

Basketball Skills: ball handling, shooting, passing, footwork, defense, rebounding
Basketball IQ: decision making, reads, situations, plays
Work Ethic: effort, hustle, willingness to push yourself out of comfort zone
Coachability: reflective, listens, learns, wants to improve
Behavior: positive attitude, good teammate, on time, responsible

Final Rosters

Final decisions regarding rosters will be made no earlier than Wednesday November 5th, and no later than Friday November 7th. All athletes are guaranteed at least 3 full days of tryouts.

Our program values open and honest communication. If cuts need to be made, they will be done in person in a private conversation between the athlete and coaches.

Selecting teams is one of the most challenging parts of the season, and we acknowledge how difficult the tryout process can be for athletes and their families. As a coaching staff, we will make every effort to ensure a safe tryout environment and fair evaluation of each athlete.
