BinaryHeart club members pose in front of the Winnetka Campus with carts full of monitors and computers that they donated
Binary Heart is a student-run service organization that collects, fixes, and donates broken or old computers to Chicago-area youth and beyond! Over 100 devices were donated during the 2023-2024 schoolyear, allowing the club to not only carry out its mission to spread digital access, but also to preserve natural resources and reduce energy used in new product manufacturing.
Grounds manager looking at tree seedling before topping with soil
With his retirement around the corner, NT's Grounds Manager put together a total count of everything he has planted since 1992 (through Spring 2024)! Over the past 32 years, the PPS Grounds Staff has planted 285 trees and 3,273 plants and shrubs at the Northfield Campus; 77 trees and 5,037 shrubs at the Winnetka Campus; and six trees and 147 plants and shrubs at Duke Childs Field.
Gates gym demolition
Of the 13,301 tons of waste generated during the demolition of the Gates Gym, 13,230 tons were recycled -- that’s a 99.5% recycling rate! In addition, 37.4% of the new building materials (by cost) were made from recycled materials. New Trier’s new facilities reduced energy consumption by 20.51% and domestic water consumption by 40.9% according to LEED baselines.
ChargePoint EV charging stations outside the Winnetka Campus
Ten ChargePoint electric vehicle charging stations were added to the Winnetka Campus last August, with more to come at the Northfield Campus during summer 2024. As of March 15, the charger dashboard indicates that 28,256kg of greenhouse gas emissions have been avoided by EV charging at New Trier since their installation—the equivalent of planting 725 trees and letting them grow for ten years!
Exterior shot of East Side Academic and Athletic Project
New Trier’s recent East Side Academic & Athletic Project has been awarded LEED Gold by the U.S. Green Building Council, the second highest level of the globally recognized sustainability achievement possible! The West Side addition was also awarded LEED Gold after its completion in summer 2017.
A composting bin in a culinary class
Whether it’s in the cafeteria, culinary classes, or even while volunteering at the community, New Trier students and staff practice composting food waste to reduce the amount of waste generated while developing responsible habits. With the help of PPS staff, New Trier’s food waste is deposited into compost bins daily and within months, the food and the leaves/grass become soil that can be used for gardening.
Aerial shot of Northfield Campus with Solar Panels on rooftops
In December 2022, the District approved a project to install solar panels on the roofs of our Northfield Campus buildings. Scheduled for completion this spring, the new solar energy system will provide over 40% of the annual power used by the campus.
Water bottle filling station
New Trier High School has been adding environmentally conscious water bottle filling stations across the District since 2017. These modern, touchless stations not only provide a safe and sanitary source of drinking water, but they also help reduce plastic waste and promote eco-friendly practices!
