ABOUT NEW TRIER'S MOBILE LEARNING PROGRAM
New Trier is dedicated to the purposeful integration of technology for all students, aiming to equip them for the future, promote digital literacy, and enrich the educational experience. These competencies are thoughtfully aligned with the Characteristics of a New Trier Graduate.
New Trier's one-to-one Mobile Learning Program (MLP) requires every student to have an iPad to support their daily work. The iPad is the district-approved one-to-one device as it offers a unique set of features proven to create opportunities for personalized learning, increased engagement, and creative expression—with the potential to transform teaching and learning.
BENEFITS OF THE IPAD
The District evaluated the efficacy of the iPad as New Trier’s one-to-one device to ensure that we are supporting all learners. Our evaluation efforts indicated that the tablet-style mobile device features were critical to the program's success, some of which include:
- Instantly record, edit, and integrate audio and video
- Immediate access to resources in classrooms
- Access to a variety of easy-to-use core productivity and course-specific apps
- Efficient feedback between teacher and student
- Improved classroom digital routines and practices
- Improved student organization and management of work
NEW TRIER IPAD PURCHASE REQUIREMENT
With the Board's support, the District subsidizes the iPad purchase, and families pay a reduced price, retaining ownership of the iPad. Students may only purchase one subsidized device during their time at New Trier. Included with the iPad purchase is a 4-year AppleCare+ Protection Plan, a keyboard case, and access to both core and curricular apps. Any replacement devices will need to be purchased from the district at the full retail cost.
ONLY NEW TRIER STUDENTS ARE ELIGIBLE
Only students who are enrolled during the school year may purchase an iPad through New Trier’s Mobile Learning Program (MLP). If a student acquires an iPad from the district and subsequently does not attend New Trier (either opting for another local school or relocating out of the district), the iPad must be returned before the first day of school, and the purchase will be promptly refunded.
* Every student and their family are expected to review and observe New Trier's MLP Acknowledgement. Upon purchasing an iPad, this document will be automatically emailed to families.
MAKING YOUR IPAD SELECTION
All New Trier students are required to purchase an iPad from the District at a subsidized cost, as well as attend an iPad training session.
PURCHAING AN IPAD
iPads purchased through New Trier include a subsidy provided by the District to mitigate the cost of ownership. This shared cost between the District and families acknowledges that the device can be used at home and at school. Students and their families can only purchase one iPad at the subsidized cost during their time at New Trier. Included with the subsidized purchase is an iPad, keyboard case, 4-year extended AppleCare coverage, and access to both core and class-specific apps.
2026-2027 MLP IPAD OPTIONS:
- iPad 256GB (11th Gen) + 4-year AppleCare coverage - $425
- iPad Loan Program (Approval Required)
Our iPad purchase portal opens on Tuesday, May 5th, 2026. Families will also schedule their student’s required iPad Orientation at this time. iPad purchases should be completed by June 30th. To purchase an iPad after the portal is closed, reach out to iPadHelp at ipadhelp@nths.net.
IMPORTANT: Only students who are enrolled during the school year may receive an iPad. If a student is scheduled to receive an iPad but decides not to attend New Trier and has not attended iPad Orientation yet, they may reach out to the business office for a full refund. If a student has already received their iPad but decides before the start of the school year to no longer attend New Trier, the iPad must be returned, and a full refund will be issued. Once the student has started school at New Trier, no refund can be issued.
CAN I BRING MY OWN DEVICE?
Access to technology resources and device restrictions require a New Trier-issued device. New Trier does not offer an option for students to use a personal device (e.g. laptop, personally-owned iPad) as their official one-to-one school device.
Due to frequent upgrades in security and device software/hardware, we do not allow students to use repurposed iPads previously purchased from the district. We do not want students to be in a position where their device is no longer supported by Apple.
APPLECARE+ COVERAGE
While we know that students do their best to keep their devices safe, the frequency of use throughout the school day can increase the likelihood of damage. That’s why the district includes four years of AppleCare+ with the purchase of the iPad. If your device is damaged, visit the trevIT help desk for guidance. For additional details about AppleCare+ terms and conditions, click HERE.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
The District provides financial assistance for families through New Trier's Financial Assistance Program. If a family qualifies, a loaner iPad will be provided at no cost.
Applications for financial assistance for the 2026-27 school year may be found in the “Forms” section of the parent PowerSchool portal. Students who qualify for financial assistance will be loaned an iPad at the time of their scheduled iPad orientation.
IMPORTANT: Families must apply and be approved for financial assistance before scheduling an orientation session for their student. Please contact the Deputy Superintendent’s office at 847-784-3409 or feebills@nths.net with any questions regarding financial assistance.

The email will come from "New Trier District 203/NTX Web Store". Either a paper or digital version of your receipt is acceptable.
If approved for financial assistance through the district, no receipt will be needed.
Student ID: Students should bring some form of photo identification to their scheduled iPad pickup (e.g. library card, former school ID, or a passport).
STAYING DURING AN IPAD ORIENTATION
Due to limited space, we ask parents to drop off their students and pick them up at the designated time. If a student would benefit from having a parent/guardian accompany them, please let us know in advance by emailing the iPad Help Line at ipadhelp@nths.net.
Most orientations run between 60 to 90 minutes.
MAKING SCHEDULE CHANGES
If families need to change the date of the student's iPad orientation, log into the MLP Web Portal and select the "Click here to change" link to choose another day and time.
IPAD RESTRICTIONS
IPAD RESTRICTIONS AT NEW TRIER
In an effort to provide students with every opportunity to be successful in the classroom, restrictions are automatically applied to student NT iPads to minimize distractions (i.e. social media notifications, texting, gaming) and encourage the use of school-approved apps and resources.
With iPad restrictions, New Trier has…
- Removed access to the Apple App Store, limiting what students can install on their iPad, including games and social media apps.. All core and course-specific apps will be distributed free of charge through our mobile device management (MDM) system called Self-Service.
- Disabled the iMessage feature on the iPad.
- Disabled FaceTime feature on the iPad.
** As of March 2025, district administration recommended an update to our administrative procedure that will not allow unrestricted iPad devices. Moving forward, we will not be accepting device restriction removal requests. **
NOTE: Use of additional personal devices during class time requires approval from the classroom teacher.
PROGRAM GUIDELINES & BEST PRACTICES
It is important that students and families are familiar with the rules associated with using technology at New Trier. Students are governed under the rules and regulations covered in New Trier's Acceptable Use Regulations (AUR) found in the Student Guidebook. In addition to the AUR, families should familiarize themselves with policies outlined in the New Trier Mobile Learning Program (MLP) Acknowledgement.
THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES ALSO APPLY:
- Internet filtering is provided at school, but not at home.
- Mobile device management (MDM) software and profiles may not be removed from the device.
- It is expected that students will have a fully-charged iPad each day for class.
- Students will not be able to use multiple Apple IDs on their school-issued iPad.
- Students may configure additional personal email accounts on their iPad, but email content on the device is subject to the terms of the Acceptable Use Regulations while on campus.
- Students must not "jailbreak" their New Trier issued iPad (modifying the operating system to bypass security or licensing). Doing so voids the warranty and violates the MLP Acknowledgement. If the student takes steps to “jailbreak” their school-managed iPad, the district retains the right to factory-reset the device and report this infraction to the student’s adviser/adviser chair.
BEST PRACTICES
- Charging your iPad - Charge your iPad every night to prepare for the next day at school. Some students may find themselves using the iPad in every period and a full charge will be necessary. New Trier does have a charging station available to students at both trevIT help desk areas at the Winnetka and Northfield campuses.
- Personal Content on the iPad - The student must be aware that there is no expectation of privacy on the iPad while on campus at New Trier. Content including documents, music, messages, emails, and photographs stored on the iPad could be accessed by authorized New Trier staff at any time.
- Backing Up - The student is responsible for backing up all data on the iPad. If additional space is needed, students can purchase extra iCloud space from Apple. Please note that New Trier High School is not responsible for data loss in the event of a device failure or malfunction.
APPLE ACCOUNTS
New students to the district will be provided with a managed Apple account (Apple ID) which offers 200 GB of iCloud storage. Students will use their school email address to access their Apple accounts. Please review this information for a list of resources that students have access to on their school-issued iPads.
For juniors and seniors, they will continue to use their personal Apple Accounts, which allows for 5GB of iCloud storage. If additional space is needed, students can purchase extra iCloud space from Apple.
CARING FOR THE IPAD
We recommend that all students care for their iPad as follows:
- Use a clean, soft cloth to clean the device's screen; do not use cleansers of any type.
- Insert and remove charging cables carefully to prevent damage to connectors.
- Handle the device carefully. Screens can crack when dropped, twisted or subjected to pressure from stepping or leaning on them. Do not stack other objects (books, binders, etc.) on top of the iPad. Be careful with carrying iPads in backpacks. The weight of other objects in a backpack is often enough to crack an iPad screen or warp the frame.
- Do not leave the iPad in places of extreme temperature, humidity, or limited ventilation (i.e. in a car) for an extended period of time.
- Keep food and beverages away from the device.
- iPads should not be left in an unlocked locker, a desk, a backpack, or other locations where someone might take it. Do not leave iPads unsecured while charging in public places.
- Students are required to secure their iPads with a Passcode. This protects their data from theft and loss.
TECH SUPPORT
Students can receive tech assistance from 7:30-3:30pm each school day at trevIT support locations. TrevIT at Northfield can be found inside the library. TrevIT at Winnetka can be found directly outside the library. Parent(s)/Guardian(s) and students can also email trevIT at iPadHelp@nths.net.
IPAD REPAIR, LOSS & APPLECARE+
New Trier is committed to providing students with high quality support so they can focus less on the technical aspects of the iPad and more on academic goals. To make the repair, loss, and damage process as easy as possible, technical support is available at each campus during school hours (7:00am-4:00 pm). If you need assistance with your iPad, please visit the trevIT desk at either campus just outside the library at Winnetka or inside the library at Northfield.

COVERAGE FOR LOST OR STOLEN IPADS
While New Trier does not insure lost or stolen iPads, there are 3rd-party options available for purchasing extended coverage for this situation; however, this is outside of New Trier’s services.
WHAT TO KNOW IF YOUR IPAD IS LOST OR STOLEN
- Students should go to the trevIT desk immediately. Any iPad registered with our mobile device management system (MDM) can be tracked when powered up and connected to New Trier’s wireless network. Students should also immediately use Apple’s Find My App or log into iCloud (icloud.com) to locate their lost device.
- A lost or stolen iPad is NOT covered by the extended AppleCare+ warranty.
- You may be issued a loaned iPad at the discretion of technology staff, depending on availability. You may keep this loaned device for up to two weeks or until you arrange to have your iPad replaced or repaired (whichever comes first).
- Any replacement devices for a lost or stolen iPad will need to be purchased directly from the district at the full retail cost.
IPAD NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY?
The process will include the following steps, in this order:
- Students go to trevIT (help desk) for a device assessment (located in the library).
- For damaged iPads, please go directly to the trevIT help desk. Do NOT go directly to the Apple store. IT staff will guide you through the next steps to ensure your iPad is properly serviced.
- Students will be directed to go to a nearby Apple store.
- Students who receive a new device from the Apple store must remain in contact with technology specialists throughout the process. All data backed up on the iCloud will transfer to the new iPad.
- IMPORTANT: All communication is issued to student's New Trier email accounts (@student.nths.net). Failure to stay in communication with New Trier technology staff will impede our ability to provide high quality service.
- If a loaned device is issued, it must be returned before the student graduates or transfers out of New Trier.
EXPIRED COVERAGE
After your 4-year coverage expires, you will be responsible for any repair or replacement costs for your iPad and charger. As a courtesy, students with expired coverage may stop by trevIT first for a free assessment before scheduling an appointment at the Apple Store.
BROKEN KEYBOARD CASE
New Trier's Mobile Learning Program (MLP) allows one iPad case for each student. Although cases are given as a courtesy to help families begin the program with a protected device, the District is not responsible for providing additional protection.
The district provided cases are rugged, durable, and built to withstand a lot of punishment. However, in the event the case becomes defective or damaged in any way, students and their families are responsible for future case/protection solutions for their iPad, as well as filing the warranty claim with Logitech
The product must be registered with Logitech to be eligible to file a warranty claim. We recommend registering your product immediately. For more information about the Logitech Limited Hardware Warranty, visit: http://www.logitech.com/en-us/footer/terms-of-use?id=3101
Keep in mind that New Trier will provide a replacement case to ensure students have consistent access to resources during the school day.
Please Note: New Trier does not facilitate the warranty claim process. The claim process is between the family and the Logitech company.
NEW TRIER'S IPAD REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT
Students who come to trevIT (outside the library at Winnetka and inside the library at Northfield) will be able to receive a free, basic diagnostic assessment by New Trier's technology specialists. While help is always available to students, it is best practice that students make sure student iPad content is being backed up automatically. Visit trevIT so we can walk you through the process; we are always here to help!
RECOMMENDED METHOD: BACKING UP TO ICLOUD
During your iPad orientation, students were required to set up their iPads to automatically back up to Apple’s iCloud. If you find that you are out of iCloud space, you should consider purchasing additional storage as it is fairly inexpensive.
BACKING UP TO YOUR COMPUTER USING iTUNES
If you do choose to backup your iPad content using iTunes on your personal computer, follow these steps carefully. * NOTE: Apple requires that users choose either iCloud or iTunes as a means of backing up content, and once you select the iTunes option, iCloud will no longer backup content automatically.
WHAT IF MY LOANED IPAD OR ACCESSORY BREAKS OR IS LOST/STOLEN?
Some students have been approved to receive a loaner iPad, but please keep in mind that loaned iPads remain the property of the district. Loaned iPads and accessories must be returned in operable condition. Damaged, lost or stolen iPads and accessories may prompt the district to seek reimbursement, on a case-by-case basis.
EBOOKS
EBOOKS @ NEW TRIER
New Trier works with teachers and department leadership to evaluate eBook and other digital textbook options for all courses. Not every classroom will use digital texts, as some textbooks or specific editions are simply not available in a digital format.
New Trier has partnered with Educare Systems to provide all textbook and academic materials to students. When purchasing eBooks specifically, Educare Systems will provide login information and instructions on how to access eBooks. Students should wait for instructions from their teachers before redeeming or downloading eBook content. NOTE: It is always good practice for families to retain proof of purchase for all academic materials for future reference.
EBOOK BENEFITS
Students should reach out directly to Educare Systems’ online support by emailing newtrier@educaresys.com. This is the best way to receive timely assistance and avoid standing in line at the onsite bookstore during peak times.
EBOOK BENEFITS
eBooks may offer a number of benefits beyond print textbooks. Specialized features can include bookmarking, in-text highlighting, note taking and sharing, access to online glossaries and other supplemental content (i.e. videos, external links). eReader apps for iPads may be needed for accessing eBooks and can be found in Self-Service, New Trier’s internal app delivery platform.
