Trevs capture state title after back-to-back overtime wins
In historic fashion, New Trier came back down 5-1 to defeat Hinsdale Central in double overtime 7-6, and then to follow that up, the Trevs beat rival Loyola 8-7 in overtime to capture the IHSA state title.
New Trier knew facing a very athletic and well coached Red Devil team on their home turf would not be easy. To beat a talented team twice is not easy, and Hinsdale came out and proved just that, going up 5-1 at half. In the second half, the defense stiffened between Meg Gallagher in goal and Allie Trukenbrod, and the offense found their rhythm and poise, In the third quarter, Ellie Bornhoeft led the comeback, followed by a free position goal by Avery Anderson, and then Riley Nolan fed to Matty Meier to cut the lead 5-4.
In the fourth quarter, Bornhoeft tied the game, but the Red Devils scored with 6:49 left. The Trevs had opportunities to score, but Hinsdale slowed the game and had the ball with three minutes left and started to run out the clock. With just under a minute left, the defense force a pass over the retraining line and the New Trier attackers chased down and pressured the Red Devils, forcing several errant passes, until Riley Nolan forced a turnover, picked up the ground ball and raced to the goal, burying her shot to tie the game with 30 seconds left to force overtime.
In overtime, neither team scored, forcing a second overtime, and the Trevs held off Hinsdale playing man down, when Emma Riley knocked down a pass and grabbed the ball. New Trier set up their offense and once again, Nolan drew a shooting space call and scored on the penalty shot for the win.
In the state final, both teams traded goals, under Anderson and Bornhoeft scored to make it 5-3 at half. Another solid quarter of defense, had the Trevs leading 5-4 going into the fourth. In the final quarter, Sonja Keneally and Meghan Riley tallied goals to put the Trevs up 7-4 with 7:51 left in the game. But the Ramblers answered back with huge goals by Molly Dwyer to comeback and tie the game with 2:02 left. Loyola got a yellow card but New Trier could not score as time ran out.
In overtime, Holly Smith grabbed the draw and the Trevs went on transition, but Emma Riley was fouled and Loyola had another yellow card. This time, the New Trier offense set up and moved the ball around looking to find a great look to goal, when Anderson passed to Bornhoeft who caught the ball and challenged to the goal, drawing a shooting space penalty. Bornhoeft lined up, the whistle blew, and she raced in and put the ball in the back of the net for the title.
Gallagher finished the season with the most saves (305) in school history. Bornhoeft finished her career with the most draw controls in school history (366).
