Fast start fuels Trevs to CSL crown

New Trier came out strong against an undefeated Evanston squad, winning draws and pushing the ball on fast breaks to go up 4-0, then 6-1, eventually winning 15-9 to capture the Central Suburban League conference championship. 

After Kennedy Meier won the opening draw, Courtney Laden drew a foul and kicked off the scoring with a free position goal at 24:10. After the Wildkits turned the ball over, Laden grabbed the ground ball and Audrey Rudolph scored on a slow break one on one drive at 23:07. Rudolph won the ensuing draw and Addie Shevitz made a beautiful feed to Meier for the first fast break goal for the Trevs at 22:52. On the next possession, Anna Seftenberg made a nice check to force a turnover that led to Shevitz scoring when she ripped a free position shot at 19:10. 

Evanston didn't go away, as All-American Maggie Farragher scored a drive at 17:05 to make it 4-1. The Trevs answered back when Ellie Bornhoeft won the draw and Emma Curry scored on a crease roll at 16:34. Bornhoeft won the next draw and Shevitz raced down the field to score a fast break goal at 16:12 to make it 6-1. 

Evanston would battle back and made it 6-3 with 14:14 left in the half wihen New Trier missed some opportunities with errant passes and fouls But after a great caused turnover by Lily Wallace, Grace Curry passed to Hana Asghari for another fast break goal at 12:51 to kick off five unanswered goals to go up 11-3. A fast break Curry to Curry goal was part of that scoring as the defense and ride had five caused turnovers. However, Evanston finished the half with some momentum as Farragher scored her third goal of the game on a great fast break feed with 4 seconds left in the half.

In the second half, Meier won the draw and Asghari scored her second goal on a free position shot at 23:54 and then another Grace Curry to Emma Curry fast break goal at 21:06 made it 13-4. Evanston answered back with two goals to make it 13-6 with 19 minutes left in the game. That's when the defense and senior goalie Elizabeth McLane stepped up, holding off Evanston for fifteen minutes. McLane made seven second half saves, three on free position shots to hold off a comeback from the Wildkits. Shevitz finished off the scoring for the Trevs with a pair of goals. The defense also ran out a yellow card without giving up a goal. Evanston scored three late goals in the last five minutes, as Farragher finished with six goals, including a crease roll with 20 seconds left. 

It took a tremendous defensive effort to slow down a very good Wildkit attack. Seftenberg had three ground balls and a caused turnover. Wallace led the defense with three caused turnovers. Ross had two caused turnovers. Izzy Resnick had three ground balls, Allie Trukenbrod had two ground balls. Meier had five draws, Bornhoeft had four and Rudolph three to lead the Trevs.
