Body Science Workout Facility

Description:
Students will help with simple housekeeping tasks.
To start the job, the intern will grab dirty towel bin and bring it to the laundry station to wash.
Student then would grab clean but damp towels from the washing machine and transfer them to the dryer to start a dry cycle.
After, the student will take a basket of towels and put all of them into the washing machine to start a fresh load to wash.
In addition to the laundry, students would also grab a clean rag and spray bottle of all-purpose cleaner to wipe down any unused equipment in the workout areas.
Job Details:
Overall, the student helps ensure clients have fresh towels to use before/during/after work out.
Students also will sanitize workout equipment and make sure the area is clean for incoming patrons.
Job tasks:
- Starting wash load of dirty towels
- Starting dryer for wet towels
- Folding towels that are both clean & dried
- Wiping workout machines with disinfectant spray
Brew Crew

Location: Brew Crew: 2nd floor outside the Library of Winnetka Campus
Job Details:
Typically, twice a week, a couple of Students and Staff from the Transition Center shuttle over. Once at the site, students prepare, make and sell warm beverages to the students and staff of New Trier Winnetka Campus. They choose to work in shifts either morning or afternoon. Each shift lasts for 1-2 hours and gives students an opportunity to work, learn how to make coffee and/or hot chocolate. Other skills these young adults build on include using a register, handling money, and other important retail skills.
Job tasks:
- Making Coffee & Hot Chocolate
- Cleaning the Barista Counter
- Keeping sale items in stock
- Setting up the Display Shelves for sales each day
- Turning on registers to accept payments for the day
- Counting the Cash drawer to ensure there is enough money to make change.
Glencoe One Stop Trev Shop

Description: Students of Transition Center run and operate the site in downtown Glencoe. The store carries all sorts of spirit gear for New Trier. These items include shirts, mugs, stickers, cards, magnets, etc. All these are also designed and created at the Transition Center by the young adults there. These items are listed for sale both on premise as well as the school website. The money from the sales go towards the program and gives students experiences in fields like marketing, sales, and designing products.
Job Tasks:
- Stocking the display shelves.
- Wiping countertops/sweeping sales floors.
- Creating labels for packaging
- Working the register and doing sales with customers
- Designing the New Trier merchandise such cards, mugs, etc.
Hubba-Hubba Clothing Boutique

Description: Student cleans the store front/ sales floor as well as tidy display shelves/clothing racks.
Job Details:
- Vacuuming
- Dusting
- Wiping trim of inner building area
- Waxing the metal clothing racks to ensure hangers don’t get stuck/screechy upon movement.
Job tasks:
- Student will start by moving furniture out of the changing rooms and clearing the store floor to vacuum.
- Then the student would dust along edges and trim of building
- Intern will then use wax paper to wipe along metal wire racks to ensure hangers did not get stuck or screech. This helps ensure customers have an easy shopping experience when browsing through the clothes.
- Next, the student would use a glass cleaner to wipe Mirrors in the changing room and front entrance way
- Student will also wipe the interior side of glass door if needed.
- After students vacuum the front door area they then move back towards the other end of the store until the entire space is cleaned.
Millen Hardware

Description:
- Student would grab regular shopping basket to gather cleaning materials from the back room where employees keep store supplies and other items that are not accessible to the public.
- Student will use cleaning supplies and go up and down the aisle being prepared to wipe dirty shelves. (looking out for: dust/dirt/grime, etc.)
- Student wipes the dirty shelves with a cleaner solution and a paper towel.
Job Details:
- Students will ensure all the aisles of the store are clean and that shelves are wiped down and are tidy of clutter to look presentable for customer sales.
Job tasks:
- Wiping shelves and checking for any stock items that may not belong and putting them in a basket for the hardware employees to sort out later.
PAES Lab (Practical Assessment Exploration System)

Description: A place where students can explore job opportunities that vary from easy to difficult level of completion. These tasks also have a range of varieties to find interest in other job-type fields. Students also do tasks alongside peer helpers who volunteer their time to help act as a “coworker” in a job setting. They monitor the work while engaging in a social atmosphere. Overall, the goal is to provide students with skills to be able to continue into their adult life. The idea is that the PAES lab has a job for everyone as well different areas of interest such as sorting, cleaning, typing, etc.
Job Details:
Mimics Real-World Settings in a Work Place
- The PAES Lab is designed to be as much like a real workplace as possible.
- Teachers become Supervisors and Students become Employees
- Employees Clock In/Clock Out, just like a real job
- Employees follow an independent work procedure, which guides them through the process of getting their own job materials and calling for supervisors only when necessary
Job tasks:
- Kids do various tasks such as alphabetizing/sorting/ labeling/ cleaning/typing. The task has a certain order to be done from start to finish to “complete” the task. The whole process is timed to ensure progress gets measured as well as seeing how well students follow step-by-step instructions. During this task, supervisors observe and note how well they can perform certain skills or where they can improve.
- The PAES lab also gives students practice for real-life work settings and managing changes in environment, listening to directions and following through with tasks.
- There are a wide range of accommodations available, for example, students can use their device for communication or sign language and other modes of communication.
- Tasks start at a base level 1 for “easy” working all the way up to level 6 “difficult” in five job categories.
Sofi’s Greenhouse

Description: A space dedicated to the ELS students to learn how to care for plants and the environment. Also, students gain skills like time management and hand eye coordination using various gardening tools.
The Greenhouse is located on the 4th floor of Winnetka Campus (outside W405).
Job Details:
- Students help manage the greenhouse space and care for plants there.
- Students will water, pot, and soil plants as well as pick up and drop off plants around New Trier office spaces at Winnetka Campus.
Job tasks:
- Watering plants/leaves as well as ensuring the temperature of greenhouse is kept at a level where the greenery can survive.
- Interns Deliver potted flowers to various offices around the campus.
- Potting plants and floral in a nice display so they are ready for sale
- Throughout the year, the staff/student workers of the greenhouse prep floral arrangements for the time of year and work with plants that are in season (ex: Holidays is poinsettia season). These flowers are sold to staff and New Trier Community.
Wilmette Public Library

Description: Student picks up cart, puts books back on the shelves in alphabetical order and in specific reading genres (fiction, sci-fi, etc.).
Job Details: Intern picks up a cart on the main floor- in back room of library. This is where employees use a card to swipe into the workroom.
They then take the cart up the elevator to the second floor where the intern goes to the children’s section. Student then stocks the returned books in the proper shelving area and in order using the call number or alphabetical sequence printed on the binding of the book with a color-coded label.
Job tasks:
- Student stocks the books that are returned
- Students ensure the area is clean and no books are left out in reading spaces.
