Strong start helps the Trevs down the Red Wings

New Trier jumped out to a 7-1 lead en route to a 16-10 win over a very athletic and talented Benet team.

The Red Wings are one of the teams on the rise in Illinois, with some strong players, including junior Shannon Early, who is committed to play at Notre Dame. The Trevs came out strong on defense, after Benet won the opening draw, Audrey Rudolph forced a turnover that led to a beautiful behind the back feed from Addie Shevitz to Kennedy Meier, who buried her shot the first goal of the game. Benet won the ensuing draw and answered with a goal by Early. That's when the Trevs went on a six goal run, as Anna Seftenberg won the next draw and when the offense set up their attack, Claire Ratke had a spectacular stutter step dodge to get an inside crease roll and score.

After a few great saves by Payton Subeck, Shevitz went on a tear, scoring a hat trick to give the Trevs a 5-1 lead. Rudolph added a free position goal and then a repeat of the Trevs first goal, Shevitz drove in and drew a double team and dumped a pass off to Meier to make it 7-1.

Benet scored on their next possession, but Holly Smith won the draw and Shevitz answered back with a free position rocket. After a draw control by Rudolph, Hana Asghari converted a free position goal to make it 9-2. Early scored for a hat trick at 4:09, and then on the next possession, Rudolph won another draw and on the slow break, Asghari rolled the crease for her second goal to make it 10-3 at half.

In the second half, Benet struck first with a free position goal by Early. Ratke hit Shevitz on a cut at 21:35 to answer back, but Benet won the next draw and Jamie Weber scored at 21:21 that kicked off a run by the Red Wings of three goals to cut the lead to 11-7.

On the next draw, Rudolph grabbed a ground ball and the attack had a poised two minute possession, capped off by a free position goal by Shevitz. Meier won the following draw and the Trevs had a minute possession to control the tempo and Shevitz drew a shooting space call and scored her seventh goal of the game with 12:40 left to make it 13-7.

The Red Wings showed their determination and talent by answering back with free position goals by Kurelko and Weber to make it 13-9 with 8:59 left, Weber's goal coming when Seftenberg was given a yellow card the Trevs played down for two minutes. Benet won the draw, but even down a player on defense, Rudolph knocked down a pass and Izzy Resnick grabbed the ground ball that enabled the Trevs to run out the card and on the possession, Rudolph drove hard 1v1 and drew a shooting space call and scored on a free position goal. Smith won the next draw and again Rudolph drew a shooting space call and again converted for her third goal of the game at 6:54.

Benet scored at 4:26, but there was no run by the Red Wings, as Meier won the next draw and then drew a double team and passed to Megan Riley who scored at 3:12.

Subeck made three saves on Benet's last possession to hold on to a 16-10 win.

Meier finished with nine draw controls, Grace Mawicke, Seftenberg and Rudolph each had two ground balls. Rudolph had three caused turnovers to lead the team. The Trevs will host Maine South next.
