Tough defense in transition and draw controls help Trevs defeat Thayer

Trailing 4-1 with 11:06 left in the first half, New Trier rallies back to win 15-10 over Thayer Academy from Massachusetts. The Trevs forced eight turnovers on the ride and won 18 draws in the win.

After calling a timeout, the Trevs defense shutdown Thayer for three minutes, and the attack came alive with seven goals in the last seven minutes of the half. Audrey Rudolph kicked off the scoring on an assist by Claire Ratke at 6:58. Addie Shevitz added two goals in a row, and Courtney Laden scored on an assist by Hana Asghari at 3:48 to make the score 5-4. After Thayer tied the game, the Trevs answered back when Shevitz fed to Ratke coming around the crease at the 2:11 mark. Rudolph fought for the next draw control and after Ava Diamond chased down a ground ball to keep the possession going, Ellie Bornhoeft drove and scored with forty seconds left. On the ensuing draw, Holly Smith directed the ball to Rudolph, who snagged the ball in the air and passed to Shevitz, who drew a foul and then converted the free position shot. 

Ahead 8-5, both teams traded goals, the first for the Trevs on a beautiful fast break goal when Allie Trukenbrod forced a turnover and passed to Asghari to drew a defender and passed to a wide open Mia Shane on the crease. Thayer came back to make it 11-9, but three unanswered goals helped seal the win, two after caused turnovers by senior Grace Mawicke Trukenbrod. 

Mawicke led the team with four caused turnovers, and Trukenbrod and Shevitz each had three caused turnovers. Six different players had draw controls, led by Seftenberg with a career high eight. Rudolph had four draw controls. 

Shevitz finished with six goals and and assist. Ratke had a hat trick and led the team with four ground balls. Diamond had three ground balls and the last goal for the Trevs. Bornheoft added two goals and also a caused turnover the ride, as did sophomore Sonja Keneally. 

The Trevs will play Vernon Hills on Monday.
