Trevs start season with Cali trip

New Trier traveled out to California for three games against some of the top teams in the Golden State. Trevs improved each game and came came close to upsetting Cali power Torrey Pines.

On Friday night, New Trier faced a very tough Coronado team that feature sisters Sydney and Breck Dunn, who helped the Islanders hold off the Trevs 14-12. New Trier and Coronado exchanged goal until the mid third quarter and then trailed 12-10, but the Trevs tied the game 12-12 and missed a couple scoring opportunities before falling behind late. Sophomore attacker Avery Anderson led the team with four goals and seven draw controls. Claire Ratke had four assists and two goals. 

On Saturday, New Trier defeated La Costa Canyon 15-7, led by a balanced attack that had nine players contribute toward their scoring. Ellie Bornhoeft had a career high 12 draw controls and also added three goals and three assists. Junior Meg Riley had a caused turnover and ground ball to lead the defense.

On Saturday night, the Trevs faced Torrey Pines, and fell behind 5-1 early, but the energy on the sideline and a determined spirit sparked by seniors Hana Asghari and Courtney Laden helped the Trevs rally back. Trailing 9-5, New Trier cut it to 9-7 with goals by Asghari and Laden. Then after several amazing saves by Meg Gallagher and a forced turnover by Allie Trukenbrod, the Trevs fought back into the game. In the fourth quarter, Gallagher and the defense held the Falcons to one goal. Anderson tallied a big goal and then after a huge draw control. Bornhoeft fed to Anderson to cut the lead to 13-11. Torrey Pines was able to close out the game with the ball. Despite the loss, the fight and determination New Trier played with was impressive, especially after playing earlier in the day. Bornhoeft finished with 11 draw controls. Laden had two caused turnovers and two goals. Asghari had three goals and an assist.
