A December to Remember: New Trier hosts final events in historic Gates Gymnasium before new construction begins

New Trier will break ground this December on a project to renovate and replace aging buildings on the East Side of the Winnetka Campus with new athletic and academic spaces that will expand student opportunities for generations to come without the need for a referendum. Before construction begins, the school will say goodbye to the 1928 Gates Gymnasium in a series of events called A December to Remember.

Following more than a year-long study, the New Trier Board of Education approved a plan to replace the Gates Gymnasium and 1925 Boiler Plant - both inflexible spaces with high maintenance costs that do not adequately meet student needs - with a new multipurpose facility. The project is scheduled to be completed by the opening of the 2023-2024 school year and will include a new multipurpose competition gym, a 6-lane indoor track, a dozen new classroom spaces, new auxiliary gyms, new strength and conditioning facilities, and a new climbing wall and high ropes course. Design elements from the Gates Gymnasium, such as the distinctive barrel-shaped roof, will be incorporated into the new facility as a nod to the gymnasium’s illustrious history.

All alumni, parents, students, staff, and community members are invited to the following December to Remember events at the Gates Gymnasium at New Trier High School, 385 Winnetka Avenue, Winnetka. Entry to the Gates is next to the tennis courts off Essex Road. Parking is available in all school lots for the in-person events. Limited street parking is also available; follow posted signs.

    December 12, 2021 at 3 p.m. -- New Trier Winter Music Festival

We are thrilled to announce that our 104th Annual Winter Music Festival is back!  The event will take place on Sunday, December 12 at 3:00pm CST.  This will be the last year that this event will be held in the Gates Gym as we know it.  The New Trier High School Bands, Choirs, Jazz Ensemble 1, and Orchestras will be performing a variety of delightful and festive pieces.

Due to capacity restrictions set in place for the safety of all, the number of audience members will be limited for this year’s in-person performance.  Ticket availability will be reserved for families of performing students.  Live streaming will be available to the general public on the NTHS website and may be found here.  Please feel free to share and post this link so that all may enjoy the event.  We appreciate the understanding of parents, families, and community members to help keep everyone safe during this event.

Thank you for your support of our incredible students and programs.  We look forward to another incredible event celebrating this honored tradition!

December 16, 2021 at 5:45 p.m. -- Athletic Hall of Honor Induction and Alumni Night

The New Trier High School Athletic Department will induct its third class into the Athletic Department Hall of Honor on Thursday, Dec. 16, recognizing Ben Almaguer, Gary Groh, Ron Klein, and Deborah Ofcky for their significant contributions to New Trier Athletics. Read more about the inductees here. The inductees will be honored during Alumni Night in the Gates Gymnasium between the girls varsity basketball game at 5:45 p.m. and the boys varsity basketball game at 7:30 p.m. against Evanston Township High School, which will be the last official games played in the space. When finished, the new facility will benefit every student through Kinetic Wellness classes and the new academic spaces as well as the thousands of student-athletes in New Trier’s Athletics program and the community through New Trier Extension classes. More information, including drawings of the project, will be available on New Trier’s district website later this month.
