Culture, Climate and Equity

  • Modern and Classical Languages Belief Statement

A departmental goal is to center language instruction around discovery and in-depth examination of different cultural aspects while moving students along the proficiency continuum. Students will examine the cultural practices, perspectives and products of their own communities in relation to cultures around the world. This growth mindset will promote a sense of cultural responsiveness and effective intercultural communication.

    Enduring Understandings

Endeavor to maintain the rigor of a strong skills-based, proficiency-driven curriculum while:

    • Expanding opportunities to learn from and explore a diversity of world views
    • Using a framework to address multiple aspects and perspectives of different cultural practices
    • Fostering understanding, encouraging empathy & healthy self-concept, raising awareness of prejudice and injustice
    • Reflecting and being open to challenging previously held notions
