Second half surge rallies Trevs over defending state champs

After trailing 7-4 at halftime, the Trevians controlled the first fifteen minutes of the second half, shutting out Loyola with tremendous defense and controlling the draws. New Trier went on a 5-0 run and held on for a thrilling 11-10 win.

Kennedy Meier won the opening draw and Grace Curry scored on a crease roll 39 seconds into the game, to kick off a great start for the Trevs. After some great defense by both teams for the next 11 minutes, Hana Asghari dodged and beat her defender to score and make it 2-0 at 13:45. Loyola's Grace Dwyer answered back at 13:33 and then the Ramblers tied the game at 11:16.

Addie Shevitz made a nice dodge and cut in front of the crease and flipped the ball past the goalie to get the lead back for New Trier 3-2. After a big caused turnover by Brooke Ross, Claire Ratke scored on a free position shot to make it 4-2 with 4:37 left in half. That's when Loyola capitalized on a couple New Trier turnovers and scored on tto fast breaks to tie the game 4-4 when a goal by Emma Burke at 3:10. The Ramblers kept the momentum going with some nice crease feeds and goals by Eileen Dooley and pair by Adrienne Leone, the last with 2.8 seconds on the clock, lifted Loyola to a 7-4 halftime lead.

After some halftime adjustments by the New Trier draw team and assistant coach Carli Harpel, the Trevians won the next two draws. Emma Curry forced a turnover and her sister Grace scored on a free position shot, as did Audrey Rudolph, and the Trevs were back in the game, making it 7-6. Ross, Meier, Rudolph, Anna Seftenberg, Allie Trukenbrod, Courtney Laden, Rudolph, Izzy Resnick and Lily Wallace stepped up with great pressure defense and communication to stop several Loyola isolation sweeps and feeds off stacks.

The team combined for eight caused turnovers, included two by Meier and Seftenberg. New Trier took advantage of some Loyola fouls and Meier and Ross both scored on free position shots to finally give New Trier the lead 8-7 with 12:47 left. Rudolph added a goal at 10:35 to make it 9-7.

Burke and Dooley both scored for Loyola to tie the game 9-9 with 8:18 left in the half. After both teams traded possessions, the Trevians set up their motion and Asghari repeated what she did in the first half with a lefty dodge down the middle of the eight meter and buried a shot in the low corner to give New Trier the lead 10-9 with 7:29 remaining.

Loyola won the draw, but a save by Kate Keller gave the Trevs a fast break and Shevitz made a beautiful feed to Grace Curry on a back door cut and scored with 6:22 left. The Ramblers Leone answered back at 5:45 to make it 11-10. New Trier got the ball back on a save by Keller, and the Trevs had the ball with under two minutes left, but missed a shot and Loyola raced down to set up their offense. That's when Keller made the biggest save of the season, with a point blank save on a nice look by Loyola with 45 seconds left. New Trier ran the ball down the field and ran the clock out.

Ross led the team with four draw controls. On attack, seven different players scored. Grace Curry had a hat trick, Rudolph and Asghari each had two goals. Meier, Shevitz, Ross and Ratke each had a goal also.

The Trevs will travel to face a tough York squad that is playing very well this season. The Dukes pushed New Trier last year and forced a Trevian rally and a narrow 10-9 win. Game is at 5:30 pm in Elmhurst.
