In a thrilling finish on senior day, the Trevians defeat the undefeated defending Wisconsin state champs University School of Milwaukee 12-11.
The Wildcats might be flying under the radar as one of the best teams in the Midwest. Coached by veteran Sam Adey and led by eleven seniors, USM showed why they are the favorite to repeat in Wisconsin as state champs.
Milwaukee forced a turnover on the Trevians first possession and senior Brooke Robinson scored to give the Wildcats the lead at 23:44. USM won the next draw and senior Molly Janssen found the back of the net at 21:05 to go up 2-0.
After the Wildcats won the next draw, Kennedy Meier forced a turnover and Lily Wallace brought the ball down the field, where Courtney Laden drove and scored at 20:09 to make it 2-1. The Trevs then scored three unanswered goals to go up 5-2. Brooke Ross scored on a free position shot, and Grace Curry fed to her sister Emma Curry on a fast break goal and then Ross scored again on a great dodge and drive at 11:08.
Senior Grace Tuttle answered back for USM with a rocket shot from outside the 8 meter at 10:33. Both teams played solid defense, as Audrey Rudolph forced a turnover, as did Ross, along with a couple saves from Kate Keller to keep it scoreless until Grace Curry grabbed a rebound off the pipes and scored with 7:41 in the half. Janssen answere back from Milwaukee at 5:54 on a fast break goal. The defense then again settled in turned away the Wildcats for over five minutes.
Mia Shane forced a huge turnover that led to Grace Curry getting fouled and scoring on a free position shot at 5:03. Lily Wallace had a caused turnover and Natalie Freres hustled down a big ground ball in the defensive zone to turn away USM. With under two minutes left, Keller made a big free position save and the offense set up, and Rudolph drove and was fouled. Rudolph scored on her free position shot to make it 7-4 with 1:56 left. The Trevs had a chance to score again after another big free position save by Keller and Meier grabbed a loose ball, but on transition, USM knocked down a pass and went down and set up and Janssen was able to get open for a feed and scored with five seconds left in the half to make it 7-5.
Janssen picked up where she left off in the second half with a goal at 22:55 to make it 7-6. But Rudolph won the next draw and Grace Curry took the ball behind and fed to her sister on a cut off the elbow to score at 22:31. Tuttle scored for USM at 21:23 when she picked and rolled free for a feed inside the 8 meter to make it 8-7. Meier won the ensuing draw and after some great ball movement, Addie Shevitz dodged two defenders to score and get the Trevs up two at 20:45. Meier won the next draw again and this time Meier fed to Grace Curry for a goal to make it 10-7 at 19:13 to give the Trevs some breathing room.
Janssen made it 10-8 at 16:13 and both teams had opportunities to score, but Elizabeth McLane made a huge free position save and the Trevs had two fast break opportunities to score after fouls but Dara Omologa made two low saves for the Wildcats. McLane then made another big save against Tuttle, and Lily Wallaced grabbed the loose ball and raced down on transition where after running some clock, Hana Asghari drove and scored at 12:44.
USM won the draw and ran out the end of a yellow card and the defense held off the Wildcats for over two minutes before Janssen scored with 9:48 left to make it 11-9. Rudolph won the next draw and the Trevian offense showed great patience and poise running over two and a half minutes off the clock before Mia Shane and Claire Ratke set up on the elow and Shane cut across drawing away the USM zone defender and Meier passed to a wide open Ratke, who dodged the crease defender and ripped a beautiful top shelf lefty shot to score with 7:15 left to make it 12-9.
The defense held strong for the next possession after USM won the draw for over a minute, but then Tuttle cut around the crease and scored with 5:59 left.
The Wildcats won the draw down 12-10, but after a shot on attack went wide, Izzy Resnick had the biggest hustle play of the game, running past a USM attacker to get possession for the Trevs.
New Trier set up their offense and ran off over two mintues, but a missed pass gave the Wildcat the ball. On transition, Shevitz forced a bad pass and the Trevs got the ball back and again ran down the clock to under 30 seconds. But USM pressured out and another missed pass gave the Wildcats the ball, and they raced down the field and Tuttle scored with nine seoconds left to make it 12-11. As the draw set up, everyone in the stadium was on their feet. On the whistle, the ball went up and both teams battled for possession as Meier boxed out Tuttle and when Robinson finally grabbed the ball, Rudolph and Ross doubled her as she stopped and the clock ran out.
The team overcame several turnovers and made some big plays when needed. Meier finished with seven draw controls. Grace Curry had four goals and an assist, while also added a draw control and caused turnover on the ride. Rudolph had three draw controls and added a goal and caused turnover. Shane had a ground ball and caused turnover on the ride. Wallace had three ground balls and a caused turnover and interception on defense. Ross had a season high two goals playing midfield and defense, also adding a draw control and caused turnover. Emma Curry had a goal and assist.
