Book Discussion for Parents: The Emotional Lives of Teenagers

Winnetka CampusNew Trier parents and guardians are invited to join us for an engaging book discussion on Dr. Lisa Damour’s newly released book, “The Emotional Lives of Teenagers,” which is already a New York Times best-seller. The book has been described as an essential guide to help parents understand their teenagers’ intense and often fraught emotional lives—and how to support them through this critical developmental stage.
The event will be co-led by Principal Dubravec, our Student Mental Health Advisory Board and members of our Library staff and will consist of the following:
- 6:00-7:00 p.m. Our Student Mental Health Advisory Board will lead a panel discussion on what resonated with the students. Attendees will then participate in both large and small group discussions.
- 7:00-8:00 p.m. Dr. Lisa Damour will join us on Zoom for a special Q&A

Movin’ On Up: Sophomore Year at New Trier
Current freshman parents and students are invited to join us to learn more about what to expect sophomore year. Hear from a panel featuring the Principal of the Winnetka campus, Denise Dubravec, the Class of 2025 Adviser Chairs, Julie Smith and Ted Koulentes, and current New Trier students. Afterwards, our student ambassadors will take you on a campus tour and answer any questions you may have about making the transition to the Winnetka campus next year.

17 Things You Need to Do Before College

ZoomSeniors, Juniors and their families are invited to join Harlan Cohen over Zoom to learn the 17 Things You Need to Do Before College. Cohen is a New York Times bestselling author of seven books, a journalist, and a speaker who has visited over 500 college campuses. He is an expert on leadership, transition, grit, resilience, risk-taking (social, emotionally, professional), dating, relationships, teens, parenting, and all aspects of college life. Movie Screening and Panel Discussion: The Disruptors
The Disruptors documentary follows five families as they navigate the challenges and surprising triumphs of living with ADHD. Following the screening, Nancy Burgoyne Ph.D., Chief Clinical Officer at The Family Institute at Northwestern led a panel discussion featuring, Megan Zajac, Director of Special Education at New Trier, Hannah Kreps and Nikki Slade, Psychologists at New Trier, and Dawn Livorsi D.S.W., LCSW, Staff Therapist at The Family Institute. College Financial Planning with Dan Maga
This webinar will educate you on how to prepare for your child's college costs, and pay for college in the most tax efficient manner. I'll also discuss how I can help you predict which each college will offer your student, prior to applying, so you know exactly what to expect in terms of financing. Dan Maga has been helping parents on the North Shore of Chicago pay for their children’s college educations in the most tax-efficient manner since the spring of 2004. Dr. Lisa Damour: Raising Teens Today
Dr. Lisa Damour spoke to New Trier parents/guardians about the normal and expectable challenges that arise during adolescence, challenges that have been introduced or exacerbated by the pandemic, and how adults can best support teenagers now. New Trier High School and the New Trier Parents’ Association present Supporting Youth Mental Health During Uncertainty: What Parents and Educators Should Know & How They Can Help. It is no longer news that there is a youth mental health crisis. According to the American Psychological Association (2022), mental health problems are pervasive and profoundly affect children’s education, safety, and futures. Dr. Nancy Burgoyne, Chief Clinical Officer, and Dr. Smita Gautam, board certified child and adolescent psychiatrist at The Family Institute at Northwestern University shared what parents and educators should know and how they can help current research and discussed the factors that impact mental health, strategies parents can employ to support their child when they are struggling, and how to access and amplify adolescents’ capacity for resilience
