Kelly Award for Writing

  • Award Name: The Jeanne Kelly Memorial Scholarship for Excellence in Writing

    Number of recipients: 1

    Award: $500; a book on writing; certificate. The winner will also be honored at the Senior Awards ceremony in May.

    Process: Nominated by teachers of 4 level senior classes. Writing judged by a committee of English Department teachers.

    Award Origins: The Jeanne Kelly Award was established in 2016, and first awarded in 2017. It is named after a colleague in the English department who taught in our AP senior curriculum since its inception at New Trier, and who taught at New Trier for 40 years before retiring in 2004. It is awarded to a student in the 4 level English program who has demonstrated excellence in writing.

    Writing Submission Details: Two writing submissions are required and include:

    1. A piece of writing completed for your class.
    2. An essay that responds to the following prompt.

      Prompt: The last year has affected all of us, often in very different and dramatic ways. What have you learned about yourself, your peers, or an area of the society around you during this time? This should be a personal reflection, not a research paper, and should include your personal observations as the main mode of exploration and reflection.

    Document Specifics: The essay in response to the prompt should be 700 to 1000 words, double spaced, Times New Roman font, 12 point. Your two documents should be combined in to one document and saved as a .pdf file. Please use the following naming convention for your file "your last name-your first name-KAW.pdf" (e.g. Zwirner-Ed-KAW.pdf).
